By offering a wide range of foreign languages courses, BabeliUM, the Language Centre of the Institute of Arts and Humanities of the University of Minho, tries to fulfill the growing need, both within the University and outside of it, for language learning, thus continuing the long tradition of the Institute of Arts and Humanities. Since 2011, BabeliUM also possesses an office in Guimarães, Campus of Azurém.
The foreign languages courses offered by BabeliUM present an outstanding quality and learning standards due to the solid qualifications and motivation of its teachers. They use innovative methods for teaching and learning languages in line with the labor market demands.
BabeliUM offers courses of German, Spanish, French, Galician, English, Italian, Japanese, and Russian. Occasionally there are also courses of Arabic, Czech, Polish, Turkish, Portuguese Sign Language, among others.
Depending on the language you choose, you may find several learning levels according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
The CEFR describes foreign language proficiency at six levels: A1 and A2, B1 and B2, C1 and C2. It provides a basis for recognising language qualifications and thus facilitating educational and occupational mobility.
BabeliUM offers courses in the following periods:
- 1st semester (October – January/February) – Biannual Courses
- Intensive courses in January/February 2/3 weeks (they take place during the break between the 1st and the 2nd semester) – Intensive Courses
- 2nd semester (February – June) – Biannual Courses
- Intensive courses in the Summer 2/3 weeks (June and July) – Intensive Courses
